Objective
Conduct a
BREEAM Schools Design & Procurement and a
Post-Construction Assessments and advise on
achieving a “Very Good” sustainability
rating.
Brief
While still at
a concept stage, we were appointed by the UK
Department for Children, Schools, and
Families (previously known as Department for
Education and Skills) as sustainability
consultants to ensure that both BREEAM
assessments—during design and post-works
completion—obtain a “Very Good”
environmental and sustainability rating.
Our role was to make sure that the whole
design team was working towards achieving
this rating, by incorporating measures that
promote sustainable development, in the
social, educational, and environmental
fields.
Throughout the design phase of project, we
looked closely at the following issues:
Pollution, transport, energy usage, indoor health and
well-Being, ecology & land use, choice of
eco-friendly or less polluting materials, water
consumption, and site and
building management. Taking into account the
technical, budget, and location constraints
of the project, we advised on the possible
ways of achieving the “Very Good” rating.
The Academy will be receiving the Design &
Procurement BREEAM Very Good certification
early 2008.
